Jason de Caires Taylor's Underwater Sculptures

Artist Jason de Caires Taylor creates multiple sculptures of people out of cement and places them in the sea off the coast of South America.  As time goes on the sculptures become one with the sea and start to grow coral and barnacles all over them.  Click the above picture to see more on the artist and his sculptures.

"Tall Painting"

This art piece is really fantastic.  Even though the piece would be breathtaking to look at in a gallery, I feel like it would also do well as a performance piece.  Watching the colors move one after another to make wonderful lines and curves would be almost hypnotic.

Street Art Photographs

I think street art is really interesting because it only exists for a certain amount of time.  It would be an amazing experience to walk down the streets of England and see a Banksy piece.  Street artists have something to express to the world, enough that they would put themselves in danger with the law to have their art be seen.

Some street artists make some really fun pieces.  If you were to walk down the street and see some of these things, it would make you smile.  Others would make you think.  I think art that can simply make your day, or make you think about life is really important to have in the world.

Photography Series

When surfing the web, I came upon an artists Flicker page.  They had uploaded a series of photographs that I thought were really interesting.  Click here to see!

I thought this series was really breathtaking.  It made me think about how photography can be so transparent sometimes.  The artist made photos seem as though they were windows to something.  It appears like the laptop displaying the pieces can be reached right through.  I think this series is really modern and creative.  It made me think a lot about what I could do with my own photography pieces.

Hartwick College Senior Show ART EVENT #2

This years senior show at Hartwick College was excellent.  I loved the variety of different pieces.  There were ceramics, glass, paintings, books, houses, and sculptures.  One of my favorite pieces was called "Shade Tree" by Crystal Postighane.  The tree-like structure had a black base and was very tall.   Small curved branch-like structures were coming out of the base  (almost like a willow tree), at the bottom a glass piece was displayed with a light inside.  The light illuminated the glass and the blues, pinks, purples, and greens were so beautiful.  Many of the glass pieces were curved, creating a wonderful sense of movement.
Another interesting piece was called "Tree of Life" by Brittany Daigneault.  She had hundreds of photographs placed specifically on the wall, so that when you would step back you would see the shape of a tree.  Each photo was of something dead, like flies, brown banana peels, moldy foods, etc.  I found it amazing that all of these dead things were so beautiful put together to make up the "tree of life."
Brianna O'Connor's paintings were also very impressive.  She had three larger paintings, one of her mother, one of herself, and another of her grandmother.  Each person was in some way an artist.  Brianna, a soon-to-be art therapist, was centered in the middle.  Everyone was sitting in an individual chair.  Brianna was looking straight out at the viewer.  However, her mother and her grandmother were looking at her, smiling.  I thought it was amazing how she captured their emotions in the eyes and face.  Anybody would be able to tell how proud her mother and grandmother were of her.
Overall the show was so unique and really showed off the talent of the senior art students.  It was really exciting to see the variety of ideas and how they were portrayed.

Combined Media; Using Photographs and Video

These photographs were combined with video to create interesting pieces.  The viewer reads each one as a photograph, then has to stop to think about the moving aspects.  It's really interesting how in the 21st century artists combine many types of media.

Julian Beever, 3-D Chalk Artist

Julian Beever is a street artist.  He has amazed people all over the world with his optical illusions.  Looking at his 2-dimensional pieces from a certain angle, they come alive as if they are 3-D objects.  Beever is an English chalk artist who has created work on the sidewalks of United States, England, Germany, France, Australia, and Belgium.

1 Minute Spray Painting

This video really amazes me.  I think spray paint is a very unpredictable, yet interesting media to work in.  I actually saw many street artists in Mexico selling paintings such as these.  Each painting would take a little over a minute to create, and they could sell each one for at least $20.  It was amazing to see in person, and it made me want to try it out and see what I could do with spray paint.

Banksy Film (Art Event #1)

Going to the Banksy film was really fun.  It was interesting to learn about street art.  The most exciting part of the movie was seeing everything that goes behind creating graffiti and other street art.  Some people see graffiti as vandalism, but it's actually a unique form of art.
Banksy, one of the most talented street artists was featured in the film.  It's interesting because he wants to remain anonymous, so he wears a hood and his voice is taped over and changed.  The movie followed film artist Theierry Guetta, who would tape almost every aspect of his life.  Banksy had always been an inspiration to Guetta.  One day Guetta received a call; Banksy needed him to be a “helper.”  Guetta rushed to where Banksy was, bought him a phone and told him to call him whenever he wanted.
Theierry slowly started to become a friend of Banksy’s.  He knew he could be trusted with keeping his identity, and eventually he even allowed him to film their various escapades.
Toward the end of the film, the focus shifted to Guetta.  Banksy inspired him to start his own work as an independent artist.  Guetta was very successful after his first art show and ended up selling over $1,000,000 worth of his work.

Shadow Art

Artists Kumi Yamashita, Tim Noble, and Sue Webster create art in which there are two aspects; the actual pieces and the shadows.  What's really interesting about these pieces is that if there is no light, or the light isn't in the exact place where it's supposed to be, the shadow will be casted differently than the artist wanted.  The viewers will take the whole piece differently than the artist intended.  Click on the picture to see more on these artists.

Liu Bolin, Camouflage Artist.

Artist Liu Bolin was inspired to create "camouflage art" by some of the animal species seen in China.  Bolin is a 35 year old from Shandong, China, but his art is appreciated at an international level.  He describes his art as a protest toward the government who shut down his art studio in 2005 and continues to persecute artists.
Each of Bolin's pieces can take up to 10 hours to complete.  He's known to work until he blends in perfectly.  Sometimes people walking by don't even notice that he's there until he moves.  After he's done painting, he is photographed blending into his environment.

NYC Inflatable Trash Art

Joshua Allen Harris considers himself a street artist.  He lives in New York City and uses shopping bags and trash bags.  His art comes to life using subway air.  His art is interesting because it looks like real trash on the sidewalk, but when the air hits the bag, it suddenly turns into a beautiful art piece.

Paper Exhibition

This piece is part of an exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design.  This exhibition shows how artists today use one simple material... paper.  I think this thought process is really interesting.  Paper can be ruined so easily, so it makes the viewer wonder how long the piece may last.

First Design Using Sumo Paint

Messing around on Sumo Paint, I made this for a tile project.  I thought the piece looked similar to a style of Picasso, which I enjoyed.

Drawing With Lines

This video really made me think about how something 2D could turn into a 3D realistic character.  This character, designed by a person on paper, has come to life frame by frame and become someone.
